Is celery the powerful anti-cancer weapon we have all been waiting for?
Many foods have various health benefits, while the individuals stand out as a miracle in the fight against certain diseases. Among them is Celery – miraculous medicinal plant has proven anti-tumor activity in the destruction of cancer cells, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, breast, lung and liver. One of the recent research has shown that it destroys 86% of the cancer cells in the lungs (in vitro).
This low-calorie foods contain the anti-cancer compound apigenin, which is particularly effective in causing apoptosis (cell suicide) in a number of cancers.
Thus, for example, researchers in China found that eating just two celery stalks 2 to 3 times a week (1 serving = 80 grams or two medium stalks) can reduce the risk of lung cancer and that for a whopping 60%. It is not yet clear whether apigenin operates alone or in combination with another active compound contained in celery.
In addition, women who eat foods with large amounts of apigenin have a lesser chance of developing breast cancer by 19% and ovarian cancer by 20%. The study showed that apigenin also affects the lethal effect, growing tumors by inhibiting cell growth and inhibiting the expression of genes associated with the growth of cancer. Also, the blood vessels that supply cancer cells, and decreased the nutrients can cause tumors.
Apigenin reduces the risk of tumor growth by reducing the vascular endothelium, and preventing the flow of glucose – reducing the cycle of formation of cancer cells to a minimum.
It is a vegetable that has many medicinal substances, contains all the B vitamins and vitamin C-complex, minerals, calcium, potassium, sodium, and essential oils – terpenes. Often called the internal body cleaner because it improves the secretion and metabolism in the body. Its leaves are rich in Vitamin A, and the stem is an excellent source of vitamin B1, B2, B6 and C, are full of potassium, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, sodium, and essential amino acids.
It is rich in sodium but unlike the salt which is composed of insoluble inorganic compounds that lead to the development of varicose veins, the arteries and other diseases of celery’s sodium is soluble in water, thus being easier to be used by the body.
Celery contains at least eight kinds of anti-cancer ingredients. Research at Rutgers University, New Jersey, was shown that it contain a number of ingredients which prevent the spread of cancer, such as acetilenici and fonolic acid. Coumarin phytochemicals which prevents the effects of free radicals and serves to prevent the development of cancer of the colon and stomach.
